One benefit of Frisco ISD’s growth is that the District now has a large collection of coaches with expertise in many areas. The value of their knowledge, and the teamwork of the District’s coaches, showed Monday as high school coaches instructed their colleagues at the FISD Track Clinic at Memorial High School.

Track coaches passed along tips, techniques and strategies to coaches from FISD high schools and middle schools during the two-hour clinic. All areas of specialty in the sport were included.

Memorial High School head track and field coach Ron Grace is a great example of the level of expertise available Monday. Grace shared his knowledge of hurdling, aided by his son Bryce Grace, a star hurdler whom he coached. Bryce Grace was a state champion in the 110-meter hurdles at Bryan Adams High School in Dallas and then a standout hurdler at Baylor University.

The goal is to help kids be the best they can be, Coach Grace said, and he was happy to share what he knew with other coaches. The information can be especially important for middle school coaches, he said, who can give their athletes a head start when they get to high school.

“It gives the middle school coaches a chance to use the verbiage that the high school coaches are using so their athletes know it later,” Grace said. “When their athletes get to high school, they’ll be saying, “Oh yeah, that’s what my coach has been saying since the seventh grade.”

Students from the FISD Sports Broadcast Club videotaped the instructional sessions, which will become an online resource for coaches.

The track clinic was one of three professional-development opportunities for FISD coaches in the first week back from the winter break. The District is also offering sessions this week, available to coaches from all sports, on developing competitors and getting the best from athletes.

“We want to do this more,” FISD Athletic Director David Kuykendall said of the clincs. “These coaches out here presenting are all rock stars. They all have passion for what they’re doing and have so much information to share.”
