Frisco ISD’s long history of success at the UIL State Swimming and Diving Meet continued over the weekend as District swimmers once again brought back a bevy of awards from Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin.

Three FISD high school teams finished in to the top 10 in the state in 5A, including the Reedy girls (fifth) and Frisco girls (10th). In the boys standings, Wakeland piled up the points to finish as the state runner-up.

The Wakeland boys showed the importance of depth by finishing in the top six in all three relays – the 200-yard medley relay, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. The 400 free relay was the final event of the meet, and the team of Jack McKenna, Conor McKenna, Brendan Debergh and Ty Gibbs raced to a second-place finish, allowing the Wolverines to leapfrog defending 5A champion Highland Park in the standings.

“I’m so proud of these boys that I can barely stand it,” Wakeland coach Melissa Howard said. “At the beginning of this year they decided they wanted to try to get into the top three in the state. They dedicated themselves to that goal day in and day out. Going into prelims it looked like they had a chance to be top five, but they defied that and set themselves up in prelims to do great things in the finals. They are an impressive group of young men and an absolute pleasure and honor to coach.”

In addition to the team honors, FISD swimmers won eight individual event medals – and three were golds. Reedy’s Abby Koczo won the 100 backstroke and was second in the 200 individual medley. Her Reedy teammate, Amelia Liu, won the 50 free and was second in the 100 free. Frisco High’s Jadyn Jannasch won the 100 breaststroke.

The other FISD medalists were Frisco High’s Lindsey Ryalls, who took third in the 200 free, and Independence’s Sienna Schellenger, who was third in the 50 free.
