Less than two weeks remain in the 2018-19 school year, but Frisco ISD still has two teams in the hunt for state titles. The Reedy softball team and the Lone Star baseball team, having already gone deeper in the playoffs than ever before, have a chance this week to extend their fantastic seasons.
The Reedy softball team made its first playoff appearance last year and lost in the first round. The Lone Star baseball team made it to the second round in 2013 and 2017. This year, Reedy (24-7) is in the fifth round of the playoffs and one victory from the UIL State Tournament, while Lone Star (32-7) is in the fourth round.
What makes these teams special?
The coaches have an answer.
Reedy coach Brook Cline, whose team finished third in District 9-5A, said her players have learned from failures and have thrived as a team. Reedy is 7-0 in the playoffs, with a single-game victory over Lovejoy and sweeps of best-of-3 series against Carrollton Creekview, Denison and Hallsville.
“At the beginning of this school year we all sat down and discussed what our team motto would be,” Cline said. “After going through an abundance of options that described our program and our goals, we chose ‘all in.’ It's an all-encompassing saying that we transfer to the field, the classroom, character development, and all other aspects of our program. They have proven that great things can happen when you are all in.”
Great things have also happened for the Lone Star baseball team, including last week’s dramatic victories over Lovejoy. After losing the opener of the best-of-3 series against Lovejoy, Lone Star won Games 2 and 3 in extra innings. That series followed Lone Star’s playoff sweeps of Denison and Woodrow Wilson.
Lone Star has the tried-and-true combination of pitching, defense and timely hitting, but the Rangers also have the intangible qualities found in champions.
“This year’s team is a great bunch of kids who have come together to work as a team,” Lone Star coach Joey Franke said. “We are a predominantly senior-led team that has done a great job of encouraging younger players to get better.”
